Building the Man, Building the Nation

To be Iraqi with Armenian roots, as is Samir Serope Daoud, author of this book, is not uncommon in Iraq’s complex demographic tapestry. Representing both national identities, Samir embodies many of the commonalities of ancestral Armenians and Iraqis today: memories of survival, the agony of displacement from one’s roots, the detachment from one’s culture and history while living in diaspora. At the pioneering Iraqi school, Baghdad College, the teenage Samir learned the tenets of humanity, the pursuit of excellence and a sense of compassion. This publication traces one man’s journey from a homeland that was once keen to nurture the nation builders of the future.
